Rio, Brazil: Five of the best places to eat and drink
Five wonderful places to eat and drink in Brazil's Rio, from finger food to rickety bars and hot chocolate brigadeiro cake. As chosen by Leticia Moreinos Schwartz, author of My Rio de Janeiro.
A rickety bar near Praca da Bandeira, Aconchego Carioca is well worth the trip. Katia Barbosa, the chef and owner, makes fabulous bolinho de feijoada and the restaurant boasts a good selection of beers, including Biritis Vienna lager, brewed by local Brassaria Ampolis brewery. Rua Barao de Iguatemi 379; 00 55 21 2273 1035.
Take a seat at one of the streetside tables and enjoy some of the best finger food in Rio at Chico & Alaide in Leblon. It serves some of the best petiscos and chopp (beer) in town. Try the bolinho da alaide, made with yucca, prawns and cream cheese.
For a more refined dining option in Rio, book a table at Olympe in Lagoa. Under French chef Claude Troisgros the French-Brazilian menu includes such elegant dishes as giant ravioli filled with baroa potato puree.
Iraja, in Botafogo, combines good service, reasonable prices and a modern take on typical Brazilian dishes. The desserts, in particular the hot chocolate brigadeiro cake, have won it a fantastic reputation.
Trendy Zuka, in Leblon, fits all occasions and is packed day and night. Chef Ludimilla Soeiro is very creative; try the prawns with pupunha tagliatelle.
