
Old-fashioned lemonade
Try this homemade version of classic lemonade for a cooling summer drink. Made with just four ingredients, it’s so much better than anything you can buy.
- 7 large lemonsunwaxed or well-scrubbed
- 500g golden caster sugar
- 15g (buy from chemists and cook-shops) tartaric acid or citric acid
- to serve soda water

Method
step 1
Wash the fruit then peel the rind in long strips from the lemons. Put the rind with 500ml water in a pan and simmer for 15 minutes.

Squeeze the fruit and pour through a sieve into the pan. Simmer gently for another 15 minutes with the lid firmly on. Add the sugar and simmer for a further 5 minutes, still with the lid on, then remove from the heat and cool for 30 minutes before stirring in the tartaric acid. Allow to sit for at least 3 hours before decanting into sterilised bottles. Mix with soda water to serve.
